Aeriscope Privacy Policy

This policy describes what information Aeriscope collects, how it's used, and the choices you have. Aeriscope provides weather forecasts and intelligence, saved locations, flight disruption risk and watched-flight alerts, live public weather cameras, and account/profile preferences.

Information you provide

• Account information. Your email address, and if you sign in with a password, a securely hashed version of it (we never store your password in plain text).
• Authentication provider information. If you sign in with Google, Facebook, or Amazon, that provider shares basic profile information with us — typically your name, email address, and profile image — depending on the permissions you grant to that provider at sign-in. We use this only to create and identify your account; signing in this way does not grant us access to your mail, calendar, or other data from that provider.
• Profile information. Optional fields you choose to fill in yourself — first/last name, a short bio, and your time zone.
• Saved locations and preferences. Your home location (place name, coordinates, and time zone from that lookup), temperature unit, interests, notification preference, and whether you've asked Aeriscope to open with your current location or your saved home location (see "Location information" below — we don't save your actual current-location coordinates, only that on/off preference).
• Default flight origin. The departure airport you set as your default for flight lookups.
• Watched flights. Flights you choose to monitor (airline, flight number, date, route) and the notifications generated for them. Watched flights are currently tied to your device (via an anonymous device cookie) rather than your account, so they're available on the device you created them on regardless of whether you're signed in.

Location information

Most locations used by the app — your home location, or a location you search for — come from a place name you type in, which we resolve to coordinates using a geocoding service.

If you tap "Use my location," your browser will ask permission to share your device's location. We only request this when you explicitly ask for it — never automatically on page load. If you allow it, we use the coordinates your browser reports to look up weather and nearby live cameras for that spot, and to resolve a human-readable place name (e.g. "Summit, NJ") using the same weather-data provider described below — coordinates are never shown to you directly. We don't store your precise coordinates or a history of where you've been; we only remember whether you've asked Aeriscope to prefer your current location going forward (a simple on/off preference, not a location log). Your browser's own location permission can be revoked at any time in its settings, and Aeriscope keeps working with manual location search either way.

Usage and technical data

In production, we use Vercel Analytics to understand aggregate usage of the Service (for example, which pages are visited and coarse, non-precise geographic/technical information such as browser type). This data is used in aggregate and is not used to build an individual profile of you.

Cookies and session data

• A session cookie that keeps you signed in, managed by our authentication system (Better Auth).
• An anonymous device-identifier cookie, used to associate watched flights and notifications with your browser even before or without sign-in.
• Your temperature-unit preference is also cached in your browser's local storage as a convenience, separate from the copy saved to your account.
• A cookie-consent cookie that remembers your analytics/marketing cookie preferences, so we don't ask again on every visit.

Third-party services we use

These providers each receive only what's needed to perform their specific function:

• Weather and aviation data — the National Weather Service / NOAA, NOAA's GFS model output, and (when configured) AeroDataBox for flight status. These receive query parameters like coordinates, place names, or flight/airport identifiers — never your account identity. When you use "Use my location," your coordinates are sent to the National Weather Service to both fetch weather and resolve a place name (e.g. "Summit, NJ") for display — the same provider, not a separate one.
• Live camera imagery — public camera feed providers (such as FAA weather cameras and Windy webcams) that serve publicly available imagery; no personal data is sent to them on your behalf.
• Geocoding — used to resolve a place name you enter into coordinates and a time zone.
• Resend — delivers sign-in, verification, and account-related emails on our behalf.
• Better Auth — our authentication system, and whichever social sign-in providers you choose to use (Google, Facebook, Amazon).

How we use your information

To provide the Service: authenticate you, remember your preferences, generate weather intelligence and flight risk assessments, deliver watched-flight alerts, and send account-related email (sign-in links, verification, and confirmation of account changes or deletion). We do not use your information for targeted advertising.

Data retention

We keep your account and preference data for as long as your account is active. Cached weather source data is retained only briefly to avoid duplicate upstream requests. Watched-flight and notification data tied to your device is kept until you delete it or request account/data deletion.

Security

Passwords are hashed, never stored in plain text. Account-affecting actions like email changes and account deletion require confirming a one-time link sent to your email address before taking effect.

Do we sell your information?

No. Aeriscope does not sell your personal information to third parties.

Your rights and choices

You can review and edit your saved preferences at any time from Settings, and you can request deletion of your account and associated data — see Delete Your Aeriscope Data for how.

Children's privacy

Aeriscope is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us using the details below so we can remove it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the product evolves. Material changes will update the effective date above.
